Volunteer Lifeguards

Become a Volunteer Lifeguard

Our lifeguards are the guardians over Pauanui Beach. They set up the familiar red and yellow flags on the beach to show the safest place to swim. Our lifeguards are trainied to identify potential victims and potential dangers, and to work proactively with the public to prevent people getting in trouble.

Volunteer lifeguards are on the beach every weekend from the first weekend in December until the last weekend in February. We also patrol Easter weekend and Labour weekend. Paid lifeguards patrol the beach on the weekdays for five weeks in January and February.

To become a lifeguard, the ‘entry level’ qualification is the Surf Lifeguard Award. We’re committed to ongoing learning and development of our lifeguards and we pay for a wide range of course in lifesaving, first aid, coaching and instruction, leadership, teamwork and communication – all to help our lifeguards to help make Pauanui Beach safer.
